Caribbean Stud poker is a casino card game that is almost always available with a progressive jackpot side bet. It is popular in both land-based casinos and online casinos as it offers some big pay offs for the right hands. It is played with one 52 card deck and uses standard poker hand rankings.

The aim of the game is to beat he dealers hand. The dealer must qualify with Ace, King or higher for you hand to pay. If the dealer does not qualify and you choose to bet you will get your bet back and double your ante. This can be a little frustrating especially if you have a good hand.

To start a game you need to place a bet on the Ante section of the table. This bet should be one third of what you are willing to bet as if you choose to play your hand you will have to bet twice the amount of your ante. Once you have placed the ante you are dealt five cards and the dealer gets five cards with one card dealt face up so you can see it.

Now you have to decide whether you think your hand will beat the dealers. In general you should always bet on hand that has a pair or better. After you have placed your bet on the table the dealers cards are revealed. If the dealer has a better hand than yours you lose your bet and ante. If you have a better hand and the dealer qualifies you are paid out according to the payout chart.

This can vary from casino to casino so in this example we will use the payout table found at William Hill Casino.

  • One Pair - 1 to 1
  • Two Pairs - 2 to 1
  • Three of a Kind - 3 to 1
  • Straight - 4 to 1
  • Flush - 5 to 1
  • Full House - 7 to 1
  • Four of a Kind - 20 to 1
  • Straight Flush - 50 to 1
  • Royal Flush - 200 to 1

On every hand you have the option of placing a £1 bet on the side bet progressive. This bet pays off if you have a hand of a flush or better. While it does have a high house edge it is almost like insurance against the dealer not qualifying when you have a big hand. The side bet pays regardless of the dealer qualifying or not. The pay offs vary, again using William Hill,

  • Royal Flush - 100% of the Jackpot (Starts at £100,000)
  • Straight Flush - 10% of the Jackpot
  • Four of a Kind - £500
  • Full House - £100
  • Flush - £50

As you can see from above if you were lucky enough to be betting £25 on the ante and £50 on the raise, were dealt a royal flush and the dealer had Ace, King or higher you would win £15000. If you had also placed a 1 side bet you would have also won a jackpot of at least £100,000.
